Concrete for East County Homes
Hawthorne sits on Alachua County's eastern edge, 17 miles east of Gainesville, and concrete contractors in Hawthorne work on a mix of older town homes, lake houses and country properties. The city counted 1,478 residents and 609 housing units in 2020. It incorporated as the City of Hawthorn on June 23, 1881, two years after the Peninsula Railroad laid track, and added the final "e" in 1950. We pour driveways, patios, walks and slabs, and we repair or replace concrete that has broken down.
A different kind of ground
Alachua County's sinkhole fact sheet says sinkholes are less common where clay-bearing layers are more than 100 feet thick, as in eastern Alachua County. That generally works in favor of concrete here compared with the karst ground on the west side of the county. It does not mean there are no soil issues. Clay-bearing soils can hold water, and a patio or drive poured on poorly drained ground can stay wet underneath through the rainy season. We look at how water moves across the lot and make sure the base drains, so the slab is not sitting on soaked soil.
Lakes and wetlands nearby
The city borders the Lochloosa Wildlife Management Area, more than 11,000 acres, and in 2011 Hawthorne acquired about 3,000 acres around Little Orange Creek. Little Orange Creek Nature Park opened in 2017. Homes near the lakes and creeks often have low spots in the yard and high water tables after heavy rain. For those lots we keep slabs slightly above surrounding grade, slope them firmly away from the house and avoid pouring where water collects. A boat or trailer pad on a lake property gets a thicker section and a solid base.
Older homes in town
The Great Freeze of 1894 ended the area's citrus groves, and the town later leaned on pulpwood and turpentine. Many houses in town are modest frame and block homes with short drives, small porches and front steps that have settled over time. Common jobs include replacing a cracked driveway, adding a carport slab, pouring a back porch floor, and rebuilding steps that have pulled away from the house. We match the scale of the home and keep the work practical.
Growth on the way
In 2015 Hawthorne annexed about 1,300 acres from Plum Creek, and a new city hall opened on County Road 2082 in 2018. New construction brings new driveways, patios and slabs, and we are glad to work with builders and owners on those. The 16-mile Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail also ends here, so cyclists and walkers are part of town life.

Hawthorne Questions
Is the ground in Hawthorne better for concrete than west of Gainesville?
Eastern Alachua County has thicker clay-bearing layers, and the county says sinkholes are less common there. The trade-off is that clay soils can hold water, so drainage under and around the slab gets extra attention.
Can you pour a boat pad at my lake house?
Yes. We pour boat, trailer and RV pads with a thicker section and a compacted base. On low lots near the water, we keep the slab above surrounding grade and slope it so it drains.
Do you work on older homes in town?
Yes. We replace driveways, rebuild settled steps, pour back porch floors and add carport slabs on older homes, keeping the new work in scale with the house.
