Concrete for a City That Doubled in Thirty Years
Homeowners calling concrete contractors in Alachua are often in one of two kinds of houses: an older home within walking distance of Main Street, or one of the many built since 1990, when the city had 4,529 residents. By 2020 the census counted 10,574 people and 4,504 housing units. That much new building in three decades means a lot of driveways, patios and garage slabs that are now 15 to 30 years old and starting to show it. We replace and repair those, and we pour new work for additions, shops and outdoor living space.
Main Street and the older blocks
Alachua was settled in 1884 after the Savannah, Florida and Western Railroad passed about a mile and a half southwest of old Newnansville, and residents moved to the tracks. The city incorporated on April 12, 1905, with 526 residents. Its Downtown Historic District is on the National Register and includes buildings such as the Bank of Alachua from 1904 and the Old First National Bank from 1909. On the older residential streets around downtown, we see narrow drives, settled front steps and walks that have been patched several times over. Replacement work there is about fitting the lot: tight side yards, mature trees and existing grades that have to drain to the street.
Newer neighborhoods and the I-75 corridor
Interstate 75 was built in the 1960s just west of downtown, and much of the city's later growth followed it and U.S. 441. Progress Corporate Park, home to many of Alachua's biotech and life science companies, sits on the northern side near the San Felasco Parkway, which opened in 2019. Subdivision homes from the 1990s and 2000s commonly have driveways with cracked corners where trucks turn in, patios that have tipped slightly toward the house, and garage floors with a settled panel by the door. We check the base before recommending a repair versus a full replacement.
Ground conditions north of Gainesville
Alachua County's sinkhole fact sheet says sinkholes form most often in the western and central county, where limestone is covered by less than 25 feet of permeable sand. Alachua sits in that part of the county, with San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park on its southern side. Most cracking we see in town is plain settlement, but we look for sudden depressions before we pour and recommend a geologist when something does not look like ordinary settling. North of town, the Santa Fe River floodplain was under a mandatory evacuation order during the Hurricane Irma flooding in September 2017, a reminder that low lots near the river need good drainage planning.
Permits and digging
The City of Alachua handles building permits inside city limits, while unincorporated land around it falls under Alachua County, whose Public Works department issues right-of-way connection permits for driveways onto county roads. We sort out which office covers your address and what the project needs before we schedule. We also file the Sunshine 811 locate request, which Florida requires at least two full business days before digging.

Alachua Questions
Who issues a driveway permit for my Alachua address?
Inside city limits, the City of Alachua handles building permits. For unincorporated addresses, Alachua County Public Works issues right-of-way connection permits for driveways onto county roads. We confirm which applies to your lot before we schedule.
My 2000s driveway has a cracked corner by the street. Repair or replace?
If the rest of the slab is level and the crack is isolated, we can often replace just that section. If several panels have moved or the base has washed out, a full replacement with a new compacted base is usually the better choice.
Can you pour a slab for a shop building on acreage?
Yes. We form and pour shop, barn and equipment slabs. Larger buildings often need engineered plans and a building permit, so we work from your drawings and confirm the permit before we start.
